till they get it wrong again especially after the start of the new tax year.

The OP appears to have one income stream. Simply going into the new tax year will not need any change of tax code other than the simple automatic uprating for the personal allowance.

For multiple income streams a SA tax return can be a very good idea. For someone with one job ( especially if there are no taxable benefits to cater for ) there is absolutely no need.

There is nothing in the OP's post that would indicate the need to go on SA.

For simple tax affairs like the OP has it's a total overkill and not necessary.

I don't have a particularly complicated financial problem. Yes I do have three sources of income if you call that complicated. HMRC could never get the split of allowances right. When I used to complain about one source having too big a code number thereby wasting allowances and another not having enough and having to pay tax They kept changing the codes from month to month and never actually getting to sort the problem.
A tax return means that the code numbers can be got rid of as every January I look at the whole previous year in total.

What you describe here is complicated in that it is very difficult to get the codes exactly right, especially where you are using split tax codes.

In these circumstances I would definitely use SA.

As long as you are paid through PAYE you will always have and need tax codes. You don't have a choice in the matter.

The letter T in the code means "Your tax code includes other calculations to work out your Personal Allowance, eg it’s been reduced because your income is over the amount for basic rate tax."

Call them. Be prepared to wait, it takes about 40 minutes to get through most times.
