Rent increase....rent decreased for advertising

Hi, 3 months ago I didn't renew my contract (I'm renting) as I was looking to move property, so currently on a rolling contract. As soon as we informed the letting agent we weren't renewing our rent increased by £50 pcm. (Certainly not justifiable as waiting months for repairs etc). Anyway that aside, we have now given our notice, all of a sudden repairs are carried out we've waited over a year for and the property is being advertised for less than we are currently paying! Be it only £5 pcm but out of principle....is this allowed?

  • I'm afraid you agreed to pay the rent increase, the LL can charge what he likes, even dropping it. As you were planning to move out anyway, I'd have at least negotiated. Just put it down to experience and move on to a better situation hopefully.

I wouldn't be too helpful with viewings following the advertisment of the property for less rent than you are paying, personally. Unless, of course, the LL paid me to allow each viewing.., say £25 a time. Should even things up a bit.

By not wanting to get into another term you made it clear you were planning on going sooner then later. They increased the rent as they knew they would need to pay the agent to look for someone else and didn't do the job because they thought what's the point especially if new people were not bothered with it. That's life!

Usual greedy agents and landlords ripping off tenants. It's the norm rather than the exception.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Yes of course it is allowed. The landlord can market the property at any rent he/she wants.

You didn't have to accept the £50 rent increase but you did. There's no use crying over spilled milk now.
