question about being registered patrially sighted.

Hi,

Just wondering if someone has visual acuity of 6/36 in each eye with suitable correction glasses and has N5 for near vision, would this entitle them to be registered as partially sighted?

Thanks

Can't remember off the top of my head what N5 is now.

    I was registered in 2007 with 6/10 and 6/12 corrected. I'm now somewhere around 6/12 and 6/18.

You need to, if you haven't done so, discuss this with the eye hospital.

a lot depends on visual field as well as acuity.
i have no visual field and best corrected acuity of 1/36, but i was registered blind in 1996 with acuity of 6/16. but this was because i already had a total loss of visual field.

usually the pperson conducting the acuity test would advise on whether they consider a patient to be partially sighted ( sight impaired) or blind ( severely sight impaired)

On VA ALONE that would not be registrable
It would depend if there was a visual field defect as well; either central field blurring/clouding or moderate reduction in field

If you're under the hospital eye service we would offer registration when appropriate, if not ask your optician to check your visual field and refer if necessary. n5 is really good in terms of reading, it's "the smallest type in general use" so your issue is with distance vision only as described.

Some low vision charities will still step in and help even if you're not registered, they tend to be small charities that cover certain areas.
