Hi

I'm moving home soon to a place with a different exchange but same area code. Every time I have spoken to them previously they have said no- I can't keep my existing number.
I've come I accept this but I had to call them today to question somethig as they changed our activation date and I was asking if we'd get a totally new number or the number belonging to the people at the new house.. (maybe a silly question but hey) I think she misunderstood and starting goig on about keeping out current number.
She said if I speak to them the day after we move in they can put our old number back on our line.
I said I'd been told this wasn't possible before as it's a totally different exchange but she said yeah its just a different process.

Now sorry if I'm a bit sceptical but is this really correct? Do I really get to keep my old number?

Or is this another foreigner just not understanding (I have nothing against them but the conversations I've had with the foreign call centers have been beyond a joke!!)

Has anyone 'renumbered' to their old number but on a different exchange?

BT's official line is that it "may be possible". Presumably some exchanges support it, and others not?

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

It's quite possible she was referring to Remote Call Forwarding.

I shall wait and see..! I'm not convinced!
She said it was free and I know call forwarding charges!
I shall update you when I know :)

Each exchange has it's own number ranges. You can't move a number from one exchange to another.

It's likely you were speaking to a customer service rep who needs a bit more training

This is correct. Unfortunately you can't port numbers between exchanges.

Nothing is impossible! I ported numbers between BT and Virgin exchanes with no issue or additional cost. Also many exchanges are split over codes - previously this was refused due to tariff conflicts but now largely irrelevant as there are no such things as 'local' calls anymore.

Also remember if you have BB, certain exchages cannot cope with ADSL in certain number groups due to physical constraints at the exchange. All you can to is ask nicely, and be pleasantly persistent.

    An the final result is........

No I cannot keep my number as I suspected.. but in the process I have also discovered that BT haven't a clue what they are on about!

Following my initial thread i had numerous other problems with BT and getting things connected -- ended up getting connected 3 weeks later than they initially told me I was going to be, and kept getting given endless promises that it's happen "tommorow"! So I made loads of phone calls!

Just to be sure I actually confirmed with them about 5 times that I was going to t be able to get my old number back (even though we were under a different exchange..) and each time I was told yes - or course, even to the point I was given a date that the switch was going to take place!!
Needless to say, on the day it was meant to happen nothing did and no-one contacted me so I eventually got through to a sensible person who said no I had been completely mislead and no it was impossible because of the different exchanges!

    Bunch of numpties!!
