Contactless scam waiting to happen - London transport

I had two debit cards from totally different banks (NatWest and Santander) cloned after using them in Tube ticket machines. NatWest were extremely quick to pick up that I wasn't in Morocco as the card had been used in my local area shortly before the attempt to use it in Morocco so they stopped it immediately. I rang Santander and cancelled my other card fearing the same thing had happened and when the fraud department finally phoned me two days later :eek: I told them I knew the card was cloned and had stopped it- good job I hadn't waited for them to contact me! I complained to TfL who denied anything had happened and that it most definitely wasn't their machine until I pointed out that the NatWest card hadn't been used for six months prior, it was only used as the bank had given me some compensation so it had money in it and the rest of the money was withdrawn over the counter in a NatWest branch, all of which I had proof of, and their machine was the only place the card had been used.
They reluctantly apologised then but since then I strictly only use cash in Underground machines. I don't go often enough or long enough to warrant buying an Oyster card but I'm going to get one for when I go in December.

Wouldn't it be much easier for them to do almost exactly the same thing, but by swiping the cards instead of using contactless? Why would they limit themselves to £30?
