But think how much moey he saved by not having it serviced. Must be 2k, plenty enough for a new engine.

Doesn't need to have new engine. It can be cleaned off.

Did some work with a company that was developing a centrifugal oil filter. One of the engineers ran his BX for 90,000 on the same oil - analysis of the oil afterwards proved it had plenty of life left.

I worked somewhere for several years where I also got to hear many similar interesting engineering analyses. It was a pub.
  • Despite putting in the correct spec fully synthetic 0W40 Mobil one Turbo Diesel, every 8K in my last car, when the service interval is 12K, the engine still failed at 145K. Maybe, my visits to the redline and beyond were the problem.

That pub would I guess have been around Illminster... as that's where they were based.

Bear in mind that this must have been nearly 30 years ago now, but no-one at the firm could seem to spot the deliberate massive obvious flaw which mean that no car manufacturer would ever come running to install this particular technology. Can you spot it?

The only correct answer is a simple one.

    "Too long".

Not necessarily; unless those visits to the redline and beyond occurred before that correct spec oil had found its way around the engine after a cold start.

    What exactly killed the engine?

[edit] hang on... diesels shouldn't be able to go beyond the red line unless a seriously erroneous down-shift is performed!
