a good LED PIR Security Light ?

I'm looking at replacing 3 x halogen PIR security lights, 2 are lower wattage and one is a 500W, blindingly-bright, and am wondering whether the LED versions are sophisticated enough and powerful enough yet for normal use.

The fluorescent versions, if like ordinary low-energy light bulbs, would take an age to produce any useful amount of light.

An LED security light is likely to be much more expensive to buy, but won't need the halogen bulbs to be replaced so often on the eaves of the house, using a 5-metre ladder! And it ought to be cheaper to run (not that it will be on long).

Does anyone have any experience of LED PIR security lights, particularly regarding the brightness? Thanks!

I was thinking about 2 of these:

and something a bit more brighter such as equivalent of 200-300W to replace the 500W halogen

  • There are 100w PIR LED lights on Amazon (one was on lightning deals yesterday)..just search for 100w PIR LED (I can't post links) and they are just over £20 (Looks like the one I saw comes from China) but the cool white one is £32 and fulfilled by Amazon...

I've not tried one but am tempted - should be pretty bright!

I replaced my old halogen security light, with LED,with one at the front of the house and a double one at the back. Both are a bright white and I am very happy with them. The light travels a long way into the garden (approx 40ft +). Not sure of the wattage equivalent though as electrician bought and fitted them.
  • We have just bought and installed 2 of these and can recommend them. They are a bit more expensive at £39 including the sensor but the are very slim and provide plenty of light (30W model) along with a 5 year bulb guarantee. The cables are short so you will need to extend them or plug into an extension. Dont forget Quidco.

The true wattage of these items is often less than suggested. That said, 50W LED will replace 500W flood ok in most cases - if you are trying to cover a large area you may need 2. I used to have 3 x 250W halogens for my drive and replaced them with 3 x 50W LED and they are ideal and have survived -18c and lots and lots of rain!

Also be aware most are "cool" white, which is fine for us but if you want a more soft light go for warm white.

    HTH!
