Credibility zero.........Cathy Newman: “What is the deficit going to be this year?”
Richard Burgon: “Well. I’m not an economic, erm. I’m not somebody who’s gonna put a figure in a crystal ball on what the deficit’s gonna be at the end of the year.”
CN: “You don’t need a crystal ball, it’s in the government’s financial forecasts.”
RB: “I think it’ll be higher than the government says it’s gonna be…”
CN: “When was the last time that you met someone from the Square Mile?”
RB: “Well. We meet people all the time from the City.”
CN: “When was the last time you went into a City firm though?”
RB: “Well I was only appointed to this role a number of weeks ago. Parliament has been in recess…”
CN: “Have you fixed any meetings with anyone in the City?”
RB: “I’ve got a very busy diary as you can imagine.”0 -
Excellent post except that it flies in the face of the facts.
Despite a huge rise in employment and population over the last 26 years trade union membership is down 28% and is still falling.
Not that you choose whatever facts define your pre-determined view of the world of course! but I agree it was an excellent post. Makes a refreshing change doesn't it to the smug reactionary bilge we often get subjected to.0 -

Does one need to know anything about the city to get rid of it? A Robin Hood tax on everything that happens there should kill it off (ie send it elsewhere) pretty quickly and then what does it matter what the monister knows or doesn't know about what it used to do?I think....0 -

No. The post stated that union membership is fluctuating. It isn't, it is in long-term, steady decline.
There is nothing smug or reactionary about that, it's just numbers.0 -
Fortunately you only tend to meet people with their views on the internet.
Well, the left certainly thought that everyone agreed with them because they only encountered their own kind online, and then blow me, in the real world the Conservatives were voted in with a majority.
As it happens, if Political Compass is to be trusted, my views are slightly right of centre, but not as far right as the Labour party! Go figure.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -
Wow, I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
It's not so much that his performance in front of the camera was bad because anyone can fluff this, but because of his complete lack of preparation. Didn't he expect to be asked questions about the deficit and about the city?I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. Don't know if you watched the Fiscal Charter debate last night but you would have been equally unimpressed by John McDonnell.
But oh my Caroline Lucas from the Green Party
Osborne "When is the moment you stop borrowing and run a surplus?"
Lucas " You stop borrowing when you can no longer afford to pay back"
Howls of laughter.

Thanks, I'd missed that! What a great way to totally destroy any shred of financial credibility you might have had!I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

We are seriously short of financially competent politicians at the current time. Better hope that there's not another crisis before we get the last one sorted......0
