in Techie Stuff
Hi all, Im at my Mums in deepest darkest wiltshire and Im trying to help her sort out her email. Trust me I am in no way techie minded but I thought Id have a better idea of what to do than she would!
She can connect to the internet (obviously as Im on here.....) but she says her email hasn't worked since last year
anyway - it comes up with this message
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.talktalk.net', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
Can anyone help pls????

Is sshe still with talktalk?
Sounds like she's trying to send through another ISP.0 -
Another pointer for you - the error message related to mail being received, not sent. POP3 is used to receive mail (mail.talktalk.net on port 110) and SMPT is used to send (smpt.talktalk.net on port 25). Is it possible for you to send mail but not receive? Can you 'ping' both of these servers from you commend line? i.e. Click Start, select Run, type 'cmd' and hit enter. A command line console will appar. Type 'ping mail.taltalk.net' and hit enter. You should get 'Reply from 62.24.128.134' or similar. If you don't then your problem is that your PC can't see the server at all (try dropping your firewall perhaps).
As johnmc suggests, a likely cause of the problem is that she's no longer with talktalk. As an aside, I would have expected the error message to give the following, rather than what you provide, but I may be mistaken:
Account: yourname@talktalk.net
Server: mail.talktalk.net0 -
Yes she is still with talktalk. She said it just stopped working one day?!! She can definitely send messages they just cant be received. I looked on the troubleshooting thing and it said to check settings supplied by your ISP provider (she has lost them.......) will try the ping suggestion....0

OK Ive done the ping thing - it came up with a few lines of
Reply from 62.24.128.134 - it wont let me copy and past it all here??0 -
What anti-virus is in use? Try temporarily disabling the e-mail scanning and then try to receive an e-mail:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

That worked thanks!! :T :T :T I removed Mcafee completely and she started receiving steady trickle of emails (she now has 238 and still counting  ) I put AVG on instead of mcaffee so fingers crossed should be OK now.
Thanks for all your help :j0
