Powergen Key Meter

Guys,

In desperate need of advice please!

My flatmate has decided in her wisdom(?!) to go from having a Electricity "contract" to a pay as you go key meter. I have heard conflicting reports of a key being more expensive and some say it is cheaper.

The conversion is taking place next week unless I can prove it is more expensive to have a key but Powergen's website gives me nothing and I can't find any information on electricity prices per unit.

I hate spending money, this is why I am here -- any help gratefully received :-)

I have never heard of a keymeter being cheaper, in my experience pre pay meters would normaly be slightly more expensive or sometimes the same price, also if you ever wanted to come off the key and back on a standard cash credit bill, most suppliers would not always be willing to switch without you firstly paying a security deposit, as far as prices per kwh,I think these should be redilly available,on the internet from someone like uswitch or from energywatch, what electricity supply region do you live in ??

Powergen's web site is not very forthcoming regarding what you are proposing. I would contact Powergen directly the question is what is the current tariff on contract and what will it be on the prepayment meter.
It is bound in my opinion to be higher, when you have the details you can make an informed decision.;)

To my knowlege Powergen's electricity prepayment tariff works out the same cost as their standard quarterly tariff, although instead of the two rate structure they have a single rate at the same price as the lower quarterly rate, with a standing charge to make up the difference. However this could change depending on your region and meter type, if you want to post the details I can look into it for you. Don't forget that info doesn't take into account the potential direct debit discount.
  • generally pre pay meters are more expensives across all the suppliers mainly due to the cost of the infrastructure to supposrt them.

contact powergen to find out the tariffs, but as was pointed out before you are also missing out on the discounts as you cant pay by DD

There is a service charge for pre pay but for example with Npower, but the unit cost is lower. In my area with NPower £17 ish a month fee but the KWH prices are about 5p less, depends how much you use. Something I am looking into changing to depending what the next bill comes in like, worked it out if I use over 338 units a quarter, then I will save money basically.
One day I might be more organised...........
