Energy readings - new house

Just got keys for house just bought and unsure what to do about having Gas and Electricity readings taken.
Don't know the previous owners energy supplier and the electric is still on.(haven't checked if the gas is on)
I understand it will take a few weeks to get a new energy supplier so how do I go about this?
I don't want to be caught out paying some of previous owners bill as it is still on.
Can someone advise what I should do in this situation? Thanks!

You should be able to find out the company from the property info form completed by the seller. Phone then x d give them readings, then speak to whoever you want to switch to.Determined to save and not squander!

Take a photo of each meter reading as soon as you can. Doesn't really have any legal meaning, but can be used to prove a point, if needed.
The Property Information Form should list the current suppliers...0 -
The one really important thing to do is to take opening readings of all meters the moment you move in. Write them in a diary and-or take photos as has been suggested. [Do the same at the place you are moving out of if this is relevant.
This is the one thing you must get right at the time to avoid paying someone else's bill. The rest of it can be dealt with another day.
For the first 28 days your supplier is the old supplier and you should give them the readings ASAP. Do not sign up to a contract or any deal with them but say that you wish to remain on a deemed contract if you wish to retain the freedom to change suppliers. To change supplier, contact the new supplier. You will however remain with the old supplier for the first 28 days.0 -
1) Read meters (and take photos?)
2) check current supplier: http://www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/guides/who-supplies-my-electricity-and-gas/
3) contact current supplier give your details ad meter readings
4) in a few weeks, shop around and switch supplier if you wish0 -
Thank you! everyone.
I did find the previous owners energy supplier and your comments have been really helpful.
I never thought to take photos of the meter readings but it's a good idea.0
