Giving notice on a rental property...when can I leave?

So, we have finally exchanged contracts on our first ever (mortgaged) house. Our completion date is 11th September.
I need to tell the letting agent, but I am unsure on when we can leave. We were initially on a six month contract which ended in February. We then verbally agreed on a rolling monthly contract but didn't sign anything so I only have my originally tenancy agreement.
Our payment date is 1st of every month and our tenancy began on the 8th (although we paid a percentage of the rent the first month).
So my question is, when can I leave? Would it be a month from now, or from my payment date or my tenancy date? I know as soon as I ring the agent , it will be viewings and inspections etc so I am asking here...
TIA

Have a read at G_M's guide to Ending an AST for more information.
Going by what you've said I think that if you served notice now to end your SPT it would end 7th October.
Edit:...because you pay your rent monthly and your tenancy periods run from 8th to 7th.0 -

Thank you,
So if I am reading that right then, I don't need to give notice until 6th September?0
