Credit balance refund charge?!

I recently received a £499 refund to my Santander credit card and requested a credit balance refund. The refund has come through but my credit card statement is showing a 3% balance transfer charge for £14.97.

Is this normal? I understand a balance transfer charge when transferring debt to the card but to charge when transferring a positive balance off seems a bit strange. After all, I haven't added any additional burden to the credit provider.

Also, there was no mention of the charge when on the phone to them requesting the refund.

What are my chances of getting this back?

  • Why not ask them?

Ive never heard of it before but I wonder if they have put it through as a balance transfer, hence the fee, rather than as a refund

No, it isn't. Demand the charge refunded.
  • Thanks for the quick replies. I'll definitely be requesting this back.

Is this a 123 card? If so might they be reclaiming cashback that was previously paid out? (Although I'd say this is unlikely given that 3% is only on fuel purchases and I can't see a refund being made for that).
  • Yes it is the 123 card but this particular purchase is not eligible for any cashback.

Not only that (unless you're out of your promotional period) there's no fees for Balance Transfer w/the 123 card.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

We don't know, but the OP used the term,
