as another example, current regulations require wall sockets to be a certain height above floor level, so the plug does not get knocked when you are hoovering.

Millions of houses still have sockets below that level. How many of these millions of home-owners get killed while hoovering due to banging the plug......?

many many houses would not meet current regulations and would need attention to bring them up to current standards. that doesnt mean they actually need rewiring or there is anything wrong with them, if you ask "do they meet current specs" you will get one answer, if you ask "are they safe and legal" the answer will probably be different.

    Which is a logical point...

However, one reason (the main reason?) for having these powerpoints set at a bit higher level from the floor is future-proofing.

I realised that when I was walking around OAP accommodation that my parents were considering moving to at one point. I was duly obviously noticing those higher power points and my mother commented "They're set at Old Lady height from the floor". The second she said that = I could see that anyone with certain health problems (eg back problems) would find that "higher" powerpoints would be much more practical than ones set down at skirting board level.

So - when I had major revamp of electrics done on house I recently swopped to = I was quite okay with the fact that I was "told" by electrician that new points would be put at rather higher level from floor (ie because regulations demand it now) - having had back problems myself before now and knowing its not exclusively an "old person" thing.

As you can imagine = if powerpoints were set at higher level to deal with ailments only old people can be expected to get, then I would have turned round and told electrician they should be put at lower level instead LOL. Hence I presume that those regulations talk about possibility of being "hit with vacuum cleaner" because quite a few people deliberately would not do any adaptation that was seen as being an "old person thing" LOL. There is strong resistance in Baby Boomer Generation to doing our homes in any way that could be perceived as us being older than the 30-something/still relatively healthy by and large generation LOL and many of us would refuse to have "old person" adaptations - even if we aren't that many years from "old personhood" LOL.

Its a source of amusement to me just how fast anything slanted at "over 50s" can be thrown away - because its obviously for the "old person generation". Not applicable to the "hope I die before I get old" generation LOL.
