Halifax ATM - Can't deposit cheque over £99?

Hello everyone

I need to deposit a cheque at Halifax, but for the next week I will not be able to do it during the day and only have time at night using an ATM. I tried last night however and I was having trouble depositing it. When typing in the amount on the cheque, after prompted, I couldn't enter a value in the hundreds because the decimal point inserted itself after the 2nd digit; I need to type in "£257", but I could only get "£25.7". Can't you use a Halifax ATM to deposit a cheque over £99? Or am I just being stupid and not doing something right?

Did you try typing 2-5-7-0-0 to give you £257.00?

Type in: two, five, seven, zero, zero, that will be £257.00. When you type three zeros, that will show as £2,570.00.

The decimal point will always be two digits before the last two numbers.

Yes. I just got "£25.70" and the last "0" didn't do anything. Thanks for the reply.

you need to enter the pence into the ATM, so if you have a round figure on your cheque you need to enter 00,

for the record you can enter 999999 so maximum credit accepted is £999,999.

The highest I have seen in 750000, although I would rather pay this in over the counter so I have a printed receipt but each to their own...

Yes, sounds like an error at that ATM, I'd try another one, although if you have the same problem then it would point to a wider fault.

Alternatively, can you send it in by post, which is what I do with the very occasional cheque that I need to pay into Nationwide? I couldn't find an obvious guide to doing it with Halifax but as I'm not a customer I don't know my way around their site.

If you enter the wrong figure the bank staff will correct it later so don't worry about it if it's wrong.

I wouldn't recommend this. I used to, and paying in cash is fine because the PO counter staff count the cash and give you a receipt showing the amount paid in, but to deposit a cheque you have to put it in an envelope and the PO counter staff can only give you a receipt acknowledging they have received an envelope.
I paid in a cheque this way a couple of years ago and the cheque never showed up in my account. Halifax said that they hadn't received any cheque and that the receipt I had was only for an envelope and didn't prove that there had been anything inside it.
I ended up having to get the cheque reported as lost and a new one reissued, the whole thing took weeks and was a total PITA.

OP do you have anyone who could pay the cheque in at a branch for you? You only need to give them your account number and sort cde (or account roll number). My mum does this for me when I get a cheque now ( she can get into a branch much more easily than I can)

Halifax definately accept larger cheques, so as others have said, it could only be either that ATM (deliberate or bug such as sticky key), or very unlikely, but an account level limit - since I assume you enter your debit card or details first so it knows it's you.
