Gurgling sound in kitchen sink

My kitchen sink isn't blocked as water seems to down at a fast rate but after a few seconds there is a gurgling sound. The sound is worse when the washing machine is being used and if a small amount of water goes down then there is no gurgling.

I know it is something to do with the air, but can i fix it without calling a plumber? My DIY skills aren't the best, but I want to learn.

I have the same problem in our bathroom, its all to do with the waste trap and air ( as you thought) easiest fix. Empty sink as normal, then immediately run just a tiny flow of water. This refills the trap.

to sum up, you have all the right ideas.
