Is this just mold or something worse?

Hi All,

We have an old wooden door to the side of the kitchen which is on its last legs (it was like this when we got the house).

Have given it a clean a few times, but always after a while, we get this black dotted dirt around the floor at the base of the door, and some mold like thing on the door as well. (pic below). The stuff on the floor is more like little balls (if you imagine what insect poo might look like?)



So really was hoping to get some ideas on:
1 - what is this stuff?
2 - depending on what it is, when we replace or refurb the door, is there anything we should do (eg: door with vent or something)?

May be totally wrong here, but does it turn red if you wipe it with a damp cloth?
It could be flea dirt if you have an animal that waits at the door?
Just a suggestion, don't be offended!
