Argos compliance with consumer law?

So I bought an Ipad from Argos around 2 and a half years ago and it's just gone out of warranty and suddenly stopped functioning. So i took it to an apple store and they said they cant fix it but can offer a replacement at a repair cost of £207.00 since it isn't in warranty. However, they said that due to consumer law the retailers that sell electronics have to cover buyers for four years despite warranty if the product isn't damaged.
They said if I bought this from them they would be giving me a brand new iPad right now for free but since i bought it from Argos I should contact them about it.
So my question is what is this all about and how true is it. What exactly should I say to Argos when I contact?
Also has anyone dealt with a situation like this before?
Many Thanks

Apple aren't correct - the seller is liable for 6 years from the date of purchase. However this isn't a blanket "fix anything" cover - it just means they have to supply a remedy if the item is inherently faulty. An inherent fault means that it was there, though not necessarily obvious, at the time of purchase. The onus is on you to prove this is the case and the seller can request that you supply them with an independent report supporting this. You would have to pay for the report, but Argos would have to refund this if the report states that the failure is due to an inherent fault. Argos would then have the choice of repairing, replacing or refunding you - though a refund can be reduced to take account of the use you have had. As the item can't be repaired and Argos are highly unlikely to just give you a replacement a partial refund is the most likely outcome - if you can prove the fault. Personally I would speak to Argos and if they want a report I would go with Apple's offer of a reduced price (though it would likely be refurbished and not brand new).0

You need to research what your consumer rights are. I don't believe what you were told in the apple store to be true.

I thought there was a sticky on here explaining the consumer rights. Here you go http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/consumer-rights-wallet-print0 -
Argos may want an independent report stating the nature of the fault .Ask them if the Apple report will cover this otherwise factor in the cost of an engineers report .
As said factor in the reduction in value as the product is now 2 1/2 years old .
£207 for a replacement with Apple warranty may be the best .0 -
Apple are also lying, when ever a person takes an Apple product to them they tell you that they would fix it for free when it's not bought directly from them to make themselves look good.
When ever they buy it from them and it's out of warranty they never fix them for free and hold fast on you having to prove it. There are as many problems about apple and their after care on here as there is about third party sellers.
Either way you have to prove the fault was inherent at time of purchase, just being faulty proves nothing.0
