Going to visit Lidl for first time - any products you would recommend?
Options
I have always shopped in my local Asda/Morrisons.
Just moved house and there is a Lidl less than 5 mins drive away so going to go along next week and try it out.
Are there any groceries you would recommend or ones to stay away from?
We are a family with 2 young children and use a mix of brands and supermarket own brands.
Thanks!

If they have an Instore bakery, the double choc chip cookies are highly addictive.
Depends what you normally buy - I find things like the feta cheese and Parma ham cheaper than mr t, and reasonable quality whereas the mozzarella is fairly tasteless. They also do free range chicken, which I prefer. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Just do your normal shop.0

Got a few favourites;Strawberry Jam - wouldn't be without 99p
Smoked Bacon Medallions - also have ham ends - make for great soup and sometimes in your lucky there will be 4 gammon steaks in there - all for £1.59
Pineapple pieces - lovely and sweet - not the slices
Shower Cream - fantastic
Fresh Fruit and veg - all good
Frozen pizza - I buy Hawiian then add the pineapple 87pCheese and onion sandwich filler - the best
They also have their own version of milky bars, mars and bounty's
and great big packets with smaller packets inside for the kids
Could go on and on. As torbrex says - just do your normal shop

The veg is excellent always
The instore bakery too but not the cheese pasties, horrible. I love crusty bread and there is a great variety.
Milk is fine, and they sell the best raspberry jam I have ever tasted, nearly as good as the jam I make lol.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It depends on your tastes really ... like everything. I like their packs of 3 mini cheesecakes - not all of them though. I used to like the blackcurrant, but they changed the brand and I've switched to lemon
The frikadellen are "interesting" - they're fat burger-shaped breadcrumbed patties either in packs of 5 or as meatballs. They're quite a dense texture, but they're ready to eat, so great lobbed into the microwave for a quick meal.
I use their cheap £1.59/200g coffee too. The packs of 500g Strathvale beef mince at £1.79 are good lobbed in the general direction of the SC for a chilli. I also have their oven chips (57p/1Kg). I use their frozen peas too.
But I have a poor palate and peasant-food tastes.
I get my eggs there, but they've changed brands to "simply" and they seem smaller (unless it's the time of year).
Ready meals - curries/spag bol etc - generally not impressed.
Tinned tomatoes are definitely a winner, 31p/can, full of tomatoes, the juice is thick and red.0 -
Just do your normal shop.
Agreed
Everyones tastes are different , and different stores have different standards ( so you cannot really say that Lidl fruit and veg are better/worse than anyone else )
Just do your normal shop , and then drop anything you dont like the "lidl version" of.0 -
Thank you all very much!0

I quite like their Thai green chicken ready meal although I don't buy it often as I have a never ending tub of Thai curry paste in the fridge.
I have a weakness for their choco peanuts , which is odd as I don't like peanut M&Ms and their Belgian buns in the in store bakery.
Their deluxe brand fruit preserve is good, and for some reason I had an inclin for choc spread the other day (spread choc spread on a wrap, add in half a banana, wrap up, ding in the microwave for 30secs and hot banana and choc wrap, yummy) and I bought their own brand version of Nutella, very nice IMO (again I'm not really keen on Nutella)
Their Knightsbridge tea bags are good value too, we're tea monsters and I drink lots of these, got regular and decaf.
Lots is trail and error like any store, my friend rates their baked beans, I dislike them but I like branston which she doesn't.
Ohhh, stollen at Xmas is divine....Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I'd agree that it's best to go there and buy as much as you can of your normal shop and give it a try.
I shop in Aldi as it's nearer my home but 'musts' from Lidl that I make a special trip and stock up on are:
Luxury muesli. We like the blue bag one but green is fine too.
Dishwasher stuff especially the salt which comes in a box with a pourer.
Emmental (blocks not slices).0 -
A stop watch.
Some use ANPR cameras that time your car parking and its £150 if you are one minute over the trolley dash time.I do Contracts, all day every day.0
