First payment on a new credit card - direct debit or manual payment?

I have applied for a credit card this month, and got accepted. During the application process, there is a section where I can put in my bank account details for a direct debit to be set up, which I did, and I selected the minimum payment option.

I have started spending on the card already, and got some transactions that are cleared.

I got my card, pin, and a letter regarding a direct debit. On the letter, it says:

"Your direct debit payment will not come into effect until you receive your next statement. For example, if a statement was sent to you with a balance, prior to you setting up a direct debit you will need to pay by an alternative method to avoid missing a payment.

When your direct debit is in place ready to collect, there will be a message on your statement that will tell you when the first debit will leave your bank account. Until you see this message, please continue to make your payment by an alternative method."

I have checked my bank account, and under the direct debit section, it is there. However, the date is 00/00/0000, and the amount is £0.00.

On my online banking page of the credit card so far, it says the following:

Latest statement
Balance on statement date:!£0.00
Minimum payment:!£0.00

Next statement due: 03 September 2015
Payment due by:!n/a

The question is: Despite, a £0.00 amount, does that mean I don't need to pay in September, and the payment will start in October instead? Or will an amount be generated sometime next week to be paid in 3 September?

Advice appreciated. Thanks.

If the balance on statement date is zero, and the minimum payment is zero, then why do you think you need to pay anything by any method?

Once the minimum payment is NOT zero, then you need to be looking for something on your statement which says something along the lines of "payment of £xxx will be collect by DD on/after dd/mm/yyyy". Until you see this, any DD is not active.

if you opened credit card A/C in August you will have to pay nothing (Unless you did a balance transfer before you got card/pin)...

if it's says £0.00 to pay then no need to pay for anything

So when your next statement is generated (Middle of sept) your Amount to pay will be what you have spend/transferred since last statement.. & will go out in October Via DD or manually what ever you chose...

Read you're statement to see what your payment is

Your (first) statement will be issued on September 3rd. It will list all your purchases up to that date, tells you the amount of the minimum payment required and the date this payment is due; usually about three weeks or so after the statement date (which means end of September).

That statement will also tell you that a "payment of £xxx will be taken by Direct Debit from your nominated bank account on or after xx/xx (date). Should that sentence be missing, then the DD is not in place (yet) and you must make a manual payment.
