Fair Milk Prices...??

For all those considering toddling along to Morrisons or Asda to pay an extra 10p per pint for "Fair Milk" why not just buy Organic Milk??

We've done this for the last 3 years as standard. It certainly tastes better but also isn't full of all the anti-biotics that is pumped into the standard milk to ensure your pint isn't filled with pus from an infected udder. And the cows are treated marginally better.

And no, I don't also buy organic meat and veg, unless it's a particular bargain, but having once watched what routinely goes into a pint of economy milk I wouldn't put it anywhere near my cornflakes...

Buying Organic Milk makes the milk farmer happy and me even happier. Win - Win.

whilst I will agree about the organic milk not being full of anti biotics etc ( well to an extent, certain ones are still permitted) how do you know that the farmer is getting paid a fair market price for his milk?

Just because the consumer is paying the premium, it doesn't mean the farmer is benefiting
  • Milk of any sort is not full of antibiotics. Every tanker load is tested at reception by the processor and will be rejected if antibiotics are detected.

Even better, why not see if there's a local milk round. There was nothing around here for years, now we have 2 to choose from.

Fresh on the doorstep first thing in the morning, and it tastes better than homogenised supermarket stuff too.

No milk in the UK contains antibiotics. All cows however are given them, including those producing organic milk. It most certainly does not mean happy cows, organic has nothing to do with animal welfare, that would be free range where the cows are given regular access to the outdoors.

As a dairy farmers son what goes into non-organic bottles and normal ones as the same, if my dad wanted to sell his milk as organic all he needed to do was slightly increase his cows grass intake, no change in their non-organic feed was needed.

You clearly do not know what goes into milk, you should also realise shelf price and producer price are not related, many farmers only receive 2p more per litre of organic milk.

Sad though it might be - the price of milk is governed by supply and demand. Demand has fallen meaning an over supply so the price falls. It's the same as anything else.

As this is a money saving site I am delighted at lower prices for anything......
  • Buy your milk from a local milk round if you don't agree with the supermarkets. There are 2 indie rounds in my area, I would get milk delivered myself if I used lots but I only use a pint a week.
  • I would like to use our milkman however, how much is a pint of milk from the milkman?
We go through 32 pints of milk a week in our house and pay £7.12 at Aldi.

I gave up using a milkman some years ago, it was just too expensive. But I see that he currently charges:

    4 pints = £2.35
    2 pints = £1.56
    1 pint = £0.82

Would cost me £1000 a year. Sorry Mr Milkman.
