Adobe Acrobat is the paid for version which allows to you to create and edit .pdf files.
Adobe Reader is the free version which allows you to view .pdf files.

FoxIt Reader is also free and generally a bit quicker and less bloated than Adobe Reader. It also installs a PDF printer which allows you to create a .pdf files from any existing file.
