Bank account got closed due to debts

  • Hi mate, no one really knows until you apply.

If the worst comes to the worst you will be able to open a basic bank account no matter what your history. Barclays and co-op are well noted for their basic bank accounts but every bank should offer these free of credit checks.

This is complicated by the fact you are in HK. I would make sure that i ring SFE in order that they don't try and pay it into your old account.

So you reckon I will still be able to open bank accounts but hsbc ? I am just scared i will not be able to do so. I guess I will open a current accounts for the time being, and change it back into the student account when I am back in the uk at the end of sept. And no I haven't thought about which bank I should go with.

thanks again, this really relieves me a lot

HSBC generally will not let you open an account once they have been forced to close an account, and in your case for bad account conduct - going into debt.

As with most other banks overdrafts are repayable on demand. In future if your planning an extended period away from the address provided to the bank at account opening, it would be wise to add a correspondence address.

As others have mentioned basic bank accounts could be available to you regardless of credit history. From experience of working in retail banking it would be unlikely that you would be offered a student account or other type with lending possible, at the present moment but that could change in the future.
    Okay thanks,
or before I do this, should I pay off the debts first ?
cos I got it on hold till beginning of oct.
Will they not let me open an account if I dun pay off my debts first ?

Currently the debt is with HSBC's in-house debt company - Metropolitan; meaning the debt is frozen, no further charges can be applied and you will need to deal with Metropolitan directly to form a repayment plan/offer. Repaying off the debt could be a good thing as it will reflect on your credit report as satisfied which could have less impact than an outstanding debt.

If the worst comes to the worst you will be able to open a basic bank account no matter what your history. Barclays and co-op are well noted for their basic bank accounts but every bank should offer these free of credit checks.

All banks are different with their criteria for accepting basic accounts; most will not accept bankrupts for example, and will therefore perform the necessary checks including credit checks.
