Going through insurance or not?

  • Thanks everyone for your input - I appreciate it. I agree with those who said just see to it myself - I don't think it's worth the loss incurred informing the insurance company and that's interesting about the hassle after only contacting for advice but not making a claim. I wondered about that myself.

My brother is through visiting this week and mentioned it might be worth getting a written quote from the garage just to ensure the price doesn't jump drastically and also that it includes VAT - something I forgot to check.

Although I'm well aware of my legal obligations, I lost my job through illness last month and your perception of things changes somewhat when there's probably no income coming in in the foreseeable future.

Because we both have a clean record and my insurance suffered no loss. Statistics can be manipulated. If somebody drives into the back of your parked car tomorrow, why does that make you a worse driver and a higher risk?
The point being made is that if you have made a claim you no longer have a "clean" insurance record.

And you have a claim that resulted in a written off car - though you seem in denial about it!

Impress on the garage that this is not a quote for insurance, and that you will be paying the repair yourself.

(It should be cheaper than an insurance job quote)

Also see what a (reputable) back street repairer will charge.

Yes I did mention that when I first went in and saw him Quentin - in each garage I went to (all recommended) I said I wasn't sure if I was putting it through my insurance or not and they all said if it was an insurance job it probably wouldn't go through them anyway as the insurance company would likely send it down to Dundee or Perth so their quotes were for me paying for the repair myself.

Someone told me today my NCB wouldn't be wiped out entirely - it would very likely only go down by 2 years. I didn't realise that. I assumed the whole lot would go.

Check your policy wording, but the norm if you don't have protected NCD is that for one claim you don't get any NCD for the year and you lose 2 years from a maximum of 5,

As yours is not protected a claim would mean you have 3 years NCD at renewal.
