Strange thing happened with NatWest

Went to an appointment at my local NatWest branch the other day to request a student account. I already have a current account with them (select platinum) with an arranged overdraft of £250.
I told the advisor I would like to keep my current account AND have a student account. She said this was OK and proceeded with the application.
Went through the rigmarole of the whole process before being told I was declined for the account but could still open a savings account if I wanted. I said no and left.
A few days later I logged into my NatWest Online Banking and requested to "upgrade" the account and to my surprise it has been successful. I now have a student account with NatWest.
Rejected in person, accepted online.
Is this common? What happened?

Presumably because in branch you were trying to keep your current account and open a student one, whereas online it's just upgraded your current account to one student one?0

Why did you want to keep two, out of interest? Isn't the student overdraft interest-free?Grateful to finally be debt free!0
