West Coast USA - moneysaving tips

Hi,
I'm doing a trip to West Coast of USA in September. flying to LA, then on to San Fran and Vegas (internal flights) and day trip to Grand Canyon from Vegas. Can't hire a car so what other cities are reachable?
And are there any tips on cheap hotels? I've heard Vegas hotels are cheap because they're subsidised by casinos, so thinking of spending a little more there to get a real bit of luxury, hoping for about $100 a night... ANy tips gratefully received.
