Agency credit checks - soft search or hard search?

Current plan:
Living in a nice rented house - rental is very high.
Aim, to move to a tiny little flat for 4 or 5 months to save a little before buying a house
Issue: When renting, you are party to a credit check by the agency or landlord; from what I know and have found out, it's generally a soft search on credit files with no footprint.
Is this correct? Obviously I want to downsize temporarily until the house that I've put a deposit on is ready for me to move into.
At this point, I'll be making a mortgage application - however I am concerned that there could be a chance that a credit check would have been performed on me and could effect the outcome of a mortgage application.
I don't think this is the case as technically, I'd not be doing applying for credit when a landlord does a credit reference check - but just for piece of mind, can anyone confirm? I have tried to locate this information on google and via this site's search and drew a blank.

They don't do a "credit" check as a bank would.
All they can do is check that you aren't bankrupt and don't have outstanding CCJ's.
They don't do anything at all to your credit file. It's not even a soft search.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
