Moving home phone hassle-HELP!

hi guys

ive just moved into a new pad and have been having lots of problems with bt (i've joined the club)

main thing was that i wanted to take my phone line rental and broadband through force9. they said that i needed to get bt to activate the line and that i didn't have to take line rental from bt. bt riposted by saying that i had to take line rental thru them as was a new customer and had to have rental with them for 12 months before i could switch to another provider.

upon duress i decided to take the line rental with bt but are they telling me porkies? does anyone know the unbiased line as i begruge paying bt unless i have to

p.s i'm still waiting to be connected and its been 3 weeks now!
thanks for any help
neil

Welcome to the MSE forums neilgrant.

No, BT aren't telling you lies. In fact, force9 are - they could, as any of the line providers now in the market (including BT) could, employ/pay Openreach to active the line. They won't (probably because they don't want to stump up the £100+ cost).

However, it is true that you don't have to take line rental from BT (silly not to IMHO but your decision) - you could get BT to activate the line, enter into a 12 month contract with them and then pay a maximum of £70 to breach the contract.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Are you an existing Force9 customer?

Force9 is actually a brand owned by Plusnet (which is actually now owned by BT!) and Plusnet have a policy of only installing/activating new lines where the customer moving in to a property is an existing customer of theirs.

It seems that Force9 have the same policy - as far as I can tell from http://www.f9.net.uk/support/customer_service/house_moving.shtml#simprov and http://www.f9.net.uk/support/home_phone/info/house_move_guide.shtml
