Hi all, I'm after some advice.
Have bought a house which currently is not connected to gas. So I enquired about getting gas installed for the central heating etc...
Transco have told me that it'll cost me £500 to connect a pipe from the street to my house. And then I'd have to arrange to buy a metre.
Just wondered if there was any way around this, and if I could get this somehow done for free?
Any advice would be appreciated, oh the house is in Manchester if that info is of any use???

Most gas suppliers will fit a meter for free, however you have to pay for the supply to be put in.0

ubnfoprtunately you will have to pay the cost of connection, but you can buy your own meter (though easier to let a supplier do it for you)
Powergen have a good new connections set up (friend has her gas doen through them said was reasonable and quick)0 -
If you look through this site you will find that some people have been quoted £thousands by Transco - £500 is the lowest quote I have seen.
If you have that as a firm quote I would accept.0 -
We've just paid National Grid £550 to connect us to the gas main thats just 2 feet away from our front door!
The work was sub-contracted out to another company (Murphy's) who were very good. Not sure it that it was worth the money but there really is no choice! As we wanted CH and there was no gas main we had to shell out. We do have a nice new plastic concealed box at the front though.0 -
Fair enough, looks like I'll have to accept it. And like Vomityspice, the gas main is only about 2 foot from the front door.
Any idea then how you go about arranging a metre installation?0 -

To get a meter installed, you'll need to contact a Gas supplier. Phone them when you have a confirmed install date.
The reason it costs £500 for 2ft is that the charges for installation are based on distance bands. I'm one of the ones being aksed to pay £1000s.
2ft from the mains supply .... lucky you :rolleyes:0
