Old defaulted account appears once again on my credit file

Bank loan was defaulted 15 years ago and dropped off my credit file around 9 years ago.
I eventually settled with with them as a f&f 4 years ago.
However, the balance that was supposed to be written off has appeared on my credit file last week.
I thought that once a defaulted account dropped off your credit file it couldn't be added on again.
It's definitely the same account with the same start date and still with the O/C

Hi RenfrewLad,
You are right, once a default comes off the only other thing a creditor can add is a County Court Judgement (CCJ) – if there is a balance owing. I suspect your credit file gives the name of the debt collector who has done this. Send them a written complaint and advise them that this debt was settled through a full and final payment. Hopefully you still have all of your paperwork to prove this; as long as you do it should be quite straight forward.
Send them a copy of the confirmation letter from the creditor/ debt collector you did the payment with and ask them to confirm the debt as settled. Also ask them to confirm that neither they, nor any other 3rd party will contact you about it and to remove the data on your file. If they refuse you can escalate the credit reference issue to the Information Commissioner and any issues of harassment can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Thanks for your reply Laura.
Here's the timeline:
2001 - credit card account defaulted by original creditor (bank)
2007 - default drops off credit file as expected.
2011 - Original Creditor (bank) offer me chance to make F&F which I was able to accept.
2015 - Out of nowhere, the written-off balance appears on my credit file. It shows the original date the
credit card account was opened in 1998, and also states that the sole entry on their credit file entry
is '0' (up to date).
I contacted Credit Expert/Experian and they stated it could take 28 days to get a response from the bank - the 28 days are up next week. Will Experian remove the entry if they have had no response from the bank?
Does the Experian chap still post on here?0 -
No Experian won't remove anything without authorisation from the creditor who added the information to your file. You need to follow the advice above and exhaust the internal complaints procedure with your lender before then taking your case to the FOS.0

You need to write to the bank to complain.
Paid or not, it should have gone in 2007 and never be seen again.:beer:0 -
Looks like they had you right over, it should have been barred.I do Contracts, all day every day.0
