Options
Hi I would really like to make my room a parisian boudoir I have the ideas in my head and the magazines with the photos.
when I look on the net the companies prices are huge ,I only want the look not the huge price.
I have tried to track down some salvage yards but the amount that come up is silly
I need a headboard (superking), bedside tables , and a nice chair ,I seem to draw towards louis style
I am happy to buy something second hand and paint and diatress it myself
I can visit essex and norfolk areas if you know any sites that can help I would be truely grateful (I have looked at ebay)

  • Ebay is a good place to start. I bought a Bordeaux (not Louis) style bed from ebay for £200 - like this one. (I already had a mattress though, which would be extra).

You might need to be a bit creative with your searches - perhaps start with "French bed" and see what that returns.

Otherwise, have a good dig through all the furniture sales, including "antiques" as that can produce some pieces, which you can then distress.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

Also try searching for 'shabby chic' on Ebay, that seems to throw out some very French influenced furniture.

My aunt buys really random and awful looking teak furniture for next to nothing from charity shops and has got the look perfectly; She paints it up and then rubs tea bags into the folds and creases etc.

Even a 1930's wardrobe suddenly looks glamorous, and I was dubious, so you don't actually need the exact shape of furniture for it to look great, just a bit of imagination. You can even buy relief patterns = flowers, grapes etc. to stick onto flat furniture to give it interest, in B&Q. You stick it on and then paint it up.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

once you've got the furniture sorted you'll want to look at wallpaper and fabric perhaps?
I've found a site, www.sandasupplies.co.uk that has lovely toile de juoy (?) wallpaper and fabric pretty cheap....
(they are also a good source for the really trendy Sanderson wallpaper as well) if anyone knows a site that is cheaper I'd love to know about it!

Anyone know of where those big warehouse furniture shops are that they show on t.v but never tell you where they are?
Or any good salvage yards in norfolk or essex?

I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:

    1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

    2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.

    3) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the righ choice because it will cost them if you return it).

    4) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.

    5) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).

Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.
  • Try car boot sales - it's amazing what can be painted. Don't forget freecycle either! I have a lovely French looking chest of drawers that I've painted distressed white and put wallpaper on the drawer fronts, love it!
