Dinner Service Death - What do you claim?

Hello Sages of the Insurance Pages,

I am about to make my first claim in 15 years (for ever really) for a bone china dinner service that was a wedding present and cannot be replaced as it is no longer made.

Its extremely annoying as we only used it on special occasions and was still mint - a shelf collapsed in the cupboard and about 50% spilled out smashing as it went.

I haven't phoned up as yet - we have a new for old accidental policy, but what do I claim for?

Do I claim for a complete similar replacement (about £700 with a quick internet reccy) or do I claim for the pieces that are broken (that I cannot get now).

I know that the premium will go up next year and following, but is there a 'threshold' whereby it would be advantageous to claim below to keep future repayments low?

It is a genuine claim and I would like a comparable replacement, but I would also like to be thrifty and astute.

All recommendations and experiences gratefully accepted.

I would suggest that your insurance costs will increase 15-30% next year, and will take 3-5 yrs of claim free years to recover gredually.

Depending on your costs, even with excess it is likely worthwhile claiming.

They should replace a set, (may ask for unbroken bits back!) or source the missing pieces, or offer cash settlement.

  • You may have to be careful as to how you explain the claim.
Some insurers are sticklers and might say that the shelf collapsing was due to wear and tear and this is never covered in insurance. Someone falling into the shelf and dislodging the shelf would always be covered on an AD policy.

Check your policy wording on SETS or COLLECTIONS and under the CLAIMS SETTLEMENT section as some company do not replace undamaged parts of sets or collections. Financial loss due to value of a collection going down is also not normally covered. A claim for under £1000 and above £100 will probably affect your premium in about the same way. Check to see if you have NCD that discounts your policy. Moving companies is not a bad thing if your premium does rise.

Any other queries let me know.

  • Cheers for the link.

They have 1 veggie bowl in stock of my pattern. We don't need this for replacement but it would be nice to get one if we can replace the rest of the set.

Its a pity the company is American - means I'm liable for customs admin charges and duty if I buy from them.
