Do Wescot Phish?

Hi there.

My husband has received a text from Wescot today saying that they are trying to contact him. We have no debts remaining, and in any case, none of our previous debts were ever defaulted, let alone sold on.

Are they trying it on?
Grateful to finally be debt free!

Yes, but more likely is a mistake or mis-trace.

In the end though unless they put something in writing or on your credit files, probably best to ignore.

  • Haha.

It's ironic: we finally pay off all our debt last month and now, for the first time in our lives, we're getting hassle from a collection company.

The only thing we can think is that, back in about 2009, we rented his old flat to a woman who decided to stop paying her bills (including rent). The utilities company installed a key meter there without our consent and we had to get it changed back after evicting her. She probably left debts at the address. That said, we've paid that utility company since (during periods that the flat was empty) and they haven't said anything about a debt.

Could a debt that she left at that address (which was my husband's address up until 2009) have caused this? How would they have got his number?

We'll be applying for a mortgage soon so we really don't need this!

It could be anything or nothing

But if you will be applying for a mortgage soon then you need to get copies of your credit files and check what is on them.
  • Thanks. Yeah we've already been looking at them because of the upcoming mortgage and there's nothing untoward on any of them. It's a mystery, but we don't want to contact them to find out.

Haha! Should we stop worrying about this then? We cannot for the life of us think of any debt that got defaulted/sold on.

Personally I would contact them to sort it out...

if its a mistake then its easily resolved...

if its not a mistake then ignoring it wont help.

Also the only way to know for sure what they want is to contact them.

Never recommend responding to phishing emails, texts or calls, you should only respond if you get something addressed to you in the post, reason being, if its not your debt, they will try to stick it on you anyway, they always work on the assumption they have the right person, even if they don't.

The less information you give these companies, the better your life will be.
