Glass oven door 'exploding' - normal??

At the weekend I had just put a meal in the oven and closed the door. A few seconds later there was a huge bang and to my shock, the glass door had shattered, spraying thousands of shards of glass all over the kitchen.

I have reported this to the company I bought the oven from but they seemed very causal. Today when the man came to install a new oven he told me ' it happens all the time'.

Do you think this is a normal occurrence? Seems pretty dangerous to me!

Its 4 years old so out of warranty but was still working fine. It was an 'essentials' one from Currys so not expensive either. Just thought it was a rather dangerous this to happen.

I'd thought more often than not it occurred due to incorrect products used on the glass, creating a weakness in the glass

    but I'm no expert

It happened to me or rather I was away on holiday when I got a call from my son to say it had happened, and when I mentioned it to others it does seem quite common. It was the interior removeable glass though, not the outer door so all the shards were contained inside the oven.

We get threads here about exploding oven doors probably 2-3 times a year. :)

It happened to a friend a few weeks ago while she was cleaning the oven.

There can be a number of causes, some manufacturing and some environmental. It could be an imperfection in the glass, incorrect fitting, inferior parts, door been slammed a few times causing weaknesses, incorrect cleaning product, things being dropped and hitting the glass.

After four years it is more likely to be environmental than manufacturing problem.

What bothers me more with this sort of thing is the "safety" glass that instead of breaking into 2-3 large and easy to clean up shards shatter into thousands of tiny pieces that fly all over the room and take ages to clean up.

Many years back we had an exploding glass oven door which happened when my dad used Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner on it. New World just came out and replaced the door.

That's really the whole point of safety glass, compared with normal glass.

Normal glass shards can be extremely sharp and do nasty injuries to anyone hit by them. Safety glass breaks into lots of little granules which are relatively harmless.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Totally normal and is designed to fail in such a way.

Though you shouldn't have needed to buy a new oven, just a replacement pane of glass.
