    I have 9 years NCD.
So, if I stopped driving for a few years (without any claims, accidents etc) - then on returning to driving my NCD would be back to zero...??!!
    Yes.

NCB "expires" after two years unused. You might be able to persuade an insurer to give you some kind of introductory marketing discount, but whether that would be portable in the same way as "real" NCB is another question.

BTW, more than about six years is ignored anyway.

My 17yr old daughter insured with Tesco Black Box last year and it's been painless.

first year cost her £1100 with ME as named driver (driving for 25+ years with 3 speeding points and an accident against my name, so a "clean" second driver could probably get it cheaper...?)

It's been great to be able to see the black box statistics every week and she has earned extra points / miles on the website for careful driving. Looking to re-insure for this year now with 1yr NCB under her belt, the same Tesco Insurance is quotiong £955. But going through comparison websites we can get it down to £820 WITHOUT a black box.

I'd prefer her to keep the black box now as it adds to my sense of security :o but she wants to try without it....

Good Luck OP - first year is the worst year.

PS My poor son failed his first test this morning and is understandably devastated, but I'm equally gutted for him. And I was looking forward to the freedom from having to accompany him everywhere...!!!!

Does anyone know if driving overseas would count...??
No, it won't. Again, some insurers may consider foreign NCB-equivalent for a marketing discount.
