Portable DVD Player playing home burn't DVD's

Can anyone give me some advice about burning my own DVD's and then watching them on a portable DVD player.

I have a digihome (Asda) DVD recorder connected to Sky+ and I can easily burn recorded programmes onto DVD, I currently use Tesco DVD-R discs. I tried to play the disc in my Venturer portable DVD player and it just made some minor grinding noises and stopped. I can play bought DVD's happily.

Is it the 'cheap' DVD's?

Is it DVD-R's?

Is it home burnt DVD's?

Thanks

You didnt give the model but the Venturer PVS166W plays both +R and -R so I would think that yours would be the same. There can be a problem playing back dvd's recorded on a dvd recorder - sometimes they only seem to play on the machine where they were recorder.
Did you finalise the dvd on your recorder?
Will the dvd's play on another dvd player?

I was a bit vague about model numbers as I didn't want to go into an endless tale of woe, my hope was that someone would ask for more detail of what they thought was a relevant area.

The good news is that you have solved the problem - even though I gave wrong information, I had been using Tesco DVD+R's and you said about finalising the disc, I just popped it back into the recorder, found the finalise option, pressed enter - and now it plays fine in the portable DVD player.

Thanks very much for your help
