Don't buy any textbooks. There's the uni library. Unless the book is out of the library and she cannot get it at all I don't recommend buying them.

I'm 8 months into my degree and I've only bought one book which is the Royal Marsden of Clinical Procedures. We tend to use a lot of research papers and books become out of date by the time they are published. She should wait till she starts. Failing that she can buy the books used from other students or on Amazon.

Many universities also have electronic copies. My son studied medicine at Nottingham and never bought a textbook.

Sounds like she wants drinking money rather than food vouchers. I had to work part time for the luxuries in life, or go without.

  • I had my student loan and my parents gave me a Gold VISA card for food, beer, games consoles etc - good times.

Yeah but not every book is in electronic form.

And to add... She can use another library of another university too. Being in London it isn't that difficult... Kingston, Kings, Middlesex some the unis she can use too.

Sixth Anniversary Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
    Hello,

Like others, my student loan did not even cover my rent. There was actually a shortfall because I had to pay for a year's rent (rather than term-time accommodation), and the fees from Student Letting agency etc.
I never received ANY money from my parents whilst I was at university. No money for food, no help with bills. I was left to fend for myself! I moved out at 19 to university and never went back. I made sure I secured a job before I moved to the city, trawling the streets for a month before I moved there, handing out CV's etc. I moved in on the Sunday, and started a new job on the Monday. If I hadn't worked, I would not have survived! Moving in at the beginning of August, with term not starting until September, meant I worked almost a full month, full time before starting my studies again. And I then continued to work 20hours a week whilst at Uni 5 days a week. It was hard work and tiring, but I never struggled for money. I had more money then than I do now!! Wish I still had that kind of disposable income...

Best of luck to your daughter with her studies :)
  • Due to my parents earning a small amount I was entitled to the full maintenance loan and grant at university. This was to cover my rent and living costs, and it was a struggle at times but not impossible. A part time job would be helpful, but only if it doesn't interfere with her studies - this was the case on my course and I would not have been able to get a decent grade if I hadn't put the time into it.

Shes at south bank zone 1, so the rent is nearly £7000 a year. She gets £3323 of student finance and £525 a month of nhs. She reckons she cant work as shes doing a nursing degree.
Need to know from other people as to what they got of parents, if im being unreasonable.

She's lucky- I had to work full time when I did my nursing diploma as my bursary didn't even cover my rent!!! Parents are OAP's so they couldn't really help either but they did what they could for me. Virtually all of my fellow students worked. I worked in Marks and Spencer food hall because I wanted to escape nursing outside of uni but plenty of my friends did bank HCA work of some description.

She cant do bank work until shes done a 12 week placement, which wont be until april, as placement start in January. She would also have to spend 37.5hrs a week on placement. So at the most she could do 2 extra shifts.

Theres nothing stopping her being a bank HCA, she can do that at any time in a hospital or care home, she can also be a bank porter. Then there is also a huge variety of jobs outside of care that she can undertake. Its only NHSP she cannot do until she has completed her first placement.
