Can anyone recommend a free system for reminding me of dates I have to do something? Preferably a desktop message but email or SMS as second best?
Allthough I put things on the calendar and in my diary I sometimes forget to look at them and miss things.

Microsoft Outlook (or its open source equivalent) is ideal for this. I schedule everything in Outlook - payment tasks, work tasks, events, appointments, other reminders etc - and if a task is overdue, it goes red until it's completed thereby acting as a constant reminder, plus I've always got details if I want to backtrack on what I've done.
I wouldn't be without it. It doesn't work at the desktop level as such, but I start it up and keep it open all day (especially as my email comes through outlook). Basically, if I foget to put something in outlook, I forget, full stop!"He who asks questions cannot avoid the answers"0 -
You can set your Outlook calendar to give you an alarm and how much notice before the event eg 5 minutes or 4 hours
Not sure if Outlook Express has this function though.

Many thanks to all respondents. I am sure I will find something to suit my needs here. As the years advance the one thing that you get better and better at is forgetting things and I'm reaching perfection in this art. A memory jogger is essential.0
