What is a default sum? And does it go on my credit file?

I went over my credit limit on my Barclaycard.
I've been issued with a £12 default sum?

I'm not sure what this means?

Will it go on my credit file?

It means that they're charging you £12 because you went over your limit. This is a fairly standard term for credit cards/store cards/mail order catalogues that charge such a sum if you exceed your limit, miss a payment, pay late or less than the minimum or have a payment refused because it takes you over the limit by an amount that the provider is not willing to cover. They'll add the £12 to your balance and it'll take you further over the limit.

It's not a default as in the type that get registered before being passed to debt collectors when someone doesn't pay.

I'm unsure of the effect on the credit file but to minimise any damage, make a payment as soon as possible to take the card under the limit.
