Fence painting

One part of the fence with my neighbour is in a bad shape - needs painting and might need replacing in the future. The neighbours house is going through sale.
Is it cheeky to paint my side using this opportunity?
It's a shared fence.

If its a shared fence, do it when you want.

Just found out that the fence is owned by us and not shared. Any way to confirm this - will the council have any information?

In my experience, it is pretty pointless painting a fence. I've found from experience that fences seem to suffer more from wind damage, than rot caused by lack of paint.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Are you getting confused between fence ownership and boundary responsibility?

The council arent going to know , nor care , who owns the fence between two houses

Spot on , most fences come pressure treated and as such , will last many years subject to wind as you say

But just painting them isnt always just to preserve them, granted pressure treated will make them last but some people paint them also for the colour

As long as you don't mess up the other side(drips through holes etc) are they going to care.

If that can' be done because of the contruction consider doing both sides.

    Ask the current owners
  • I would just go ahead and paint, you say it belongs to you, and the other side will not see what yo have painted unless as getmore4less states - you don't mess up with drips.

You will have a tidier fence and garden, if just newly painted giving the appearance the property/fence is well looked after.:)

  • Don't paint a fence that is not yours, you can be had for criminal damage.
It's no different to someone deciding they don't like your front door and painting that.
