India visa needed for transit in Delhi?

My travel co say I need an India visa even though i'm only transiting from UK via Delhi to Kathmandu. Doesn't sound right to me but I can't find this issue addressed on the official india visa site or jet airways (my carrier) but on trip advisor I get the impression it's not needed. Anyone know where I can confirm one way or the other?

I use this website for up to date visa info, and it does appear you need a visa for transit if you're a British passport holder.

This is also shown on Jets website but isn't absolutely clear. I'd want clarification from your travel agent regarding the section I've underlined.
Visa requirements for American and European passport holders
American and European passport holders travelling to Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka do not require a visa for stays less than 30 days. However, if you book a flight transiting between two airports in India, you will need an Indian visa in order to clear the customs and immigration formalities.

I haven't been to India for a few years but it's always taken a few days to sort them out. The whole process has been contracted out so you'll need to look at this website. They are also one of the more expensive visas to buy I'm afraid. It looks as though it'll cost you £63.44.
I've read the page a couple of times and can't quite work out whether a transit visa is required if you're just in the airport for a couple of hours or only to actually enter Delhi (a liquid lunch isn't helping my concentration!).

I use the following
http://www.staralliance.com/en/services/visa-and-health/
But when I transited Delhi on my way to Nepal I didn't have to have an Indian visaVisa required, except for Holders of an Overseas Citizen of
India Card or Booklet, or:
Visa required, except for Holders of a Person of Indian Origin
(PIO) Card, or:
TWOV (Transit Without Visa):
Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward tickets
for a max. transit For details, click here time of 24 hours.
- Hotel facilities are available in Terminal 3 at Delhi (DEL),
provided holding boarding card for connecting flight.
Additional Information:
- Holders of visas that specifically state the city/airport of
entry must enter India at the specified city/airport.0 -
alanrowell - that looks like the answer0

I certainly didn't have one when travelling from Kathmandu to London via Delhi, although it was 24 years ago so things may have changed.0

They offer 'transit without visa'. For this, your stay within India must be for less than 24 hours; you must have a confirmed reservation for an onward international flight within that time period; your onward flight must depart from the same airport as the one where you arrive (so if you need to get from one airport in India to a different Indian airport as party of your journey you will need a visa).
This position is set out in the links quoted above, but the language is not terribly clear.0 -

It's easy enough to get your Nepal VOA at Kathmandu Airport.
Print-off the application form online, and fill it in before you arrive....

Pay in US$ or you'll get scammed on the exchange rate.
Join the right visa queue.
Money changer to the left of the visa queue, and you get only slightly less than in town.
We were off the aircraft and reclaimed our bags in about 20 minutes.
Keep your luggage receipt (stuck to your Boarding Card or Passport), as it'll be checked before you leave the Arrival Building.
Take a face mask for Kathmandu as the air pollution is horrid.0 -
I'm puzzled Pete, what makes you think that posting how to get a Nepalese visa is in any way relevant to a thread asking whether an Indian visa is required to transit in Delhi?0

The OP's final destination is Kathmandu, so I thought I'd chip in a little about how easy it is to get a VOA for Nepal.0 -

Obviously it pays to check the proper Government sites for the country you're visiting, but aside from those, some of which are pretty hopeless, the IATA powered sites like the above are the best source of accurate information.
Many of the airlines use the IATA database to decide who can board the aircraft and who can't
