BT Moving Home - forced new contract!?

Hi

We are moving home at the end of the month and our contract with BT Broadband and Phone ends in January.
BT has said, if we move home they have said we can take our contract like for like as we're on a fantastic deal but we will have to start a new 12m contract on the line but in January our Broadband will end as normal.

We have paid for our line rental upfront so this also comes to an end in January.

We were hoping to have the option to change provider in January with both broadband and phone because we tend to hop around each year to get the best deals and know that our BT price is going to almost double at the end of our contract.

Is there a way round them forcing us into a new contract as it seems a bit unfair?

Nothing unfair about it at all.

You are moving property so BT will need to cease at the current property and provide new service at the new property. BT are doing this at their expense - effectively releasing you from your old contract on the condition you take out a new contract at your new address.

Sounds quite a good offer, since still under contract..

Other option being to look to buyout the existing contract (most likely lose the upfront line rental you've paid for), then pay any connection charges at the new property?..

As said don't take out a new contract if you think its unfair pay the old one off .
Get prices for a new contract at the new address and work out what you have to pay extra or not .Advanced Line Rental will also be lost so factor that in to your costs .

Nothing contractual is being 'forced' upon you. Absolutely standard practice, they pay the home move costs and in return not unreasonably ask you to commit to a new 12m minimum term.
Why would they absorb all those fixed costs only for you to leave in January?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The contract that renews when you move is for the line only.

It won't renew your broadband contract or your line rental saver when you move so you will still be free to negotiate a new deal for line and broadband with BT in January.

If you leave BT in January the charge for canceling will be £7.50 for each month left, so about £50.

Switching using a cashback site can more than make up for this and is probably a lot cheaper than ending your BT contract now.
