It's right there, between the front and rear door (same position on latest model) how did you miss it?
I've never been near one but it was obvious just looking online at pictures where it is. Surely even easier in the flesh?
Anyway you agreed to pay them exorbitant fees the second you signed the rental agreement. Stick to these companies terms, to the letter, or you get charged. It's just the way it is.

The only "problem" with picking it up and returning it empty is that sod's law says you'll hand it back with half a tank, having mis-judged the distance from when you filled it, having collected it on fumes.
This is true -- but even a half tank isn't going to cost anywhere near the £126 the OP was charged.
I suppose if you really wanted to be MSE, and you had a diesel car you could syphon the remainder off0
