Gloss paint - recommendations

Just about to get gloss paint to do woodwork in living room. I was told to get Dulux but reading recent reviews in B&Q of paint not drying and peeling off I'm not so sure now. My friend also says she'll not use Dulux now as it went yellow very quickly.

What is the best white paint for woodwork?

All oil based white gloss paints will turn yellow very quickly (3-4 months) due to the change in formula to reduce VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

If you want something to stay white, you will need to use a Satinwood.

I much prefer the look and finish, as well as the longevity of Satinwood also.

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.
  • satinwood all day long, less of a sheen on it when dry, personally think it looks far better

Ok - any recommendations for a particular brand?

Any issue with painting over gloss paint?

    Crown, dulux, Johnstones, Macphersons.

Give it a light sanding first and a coat of oil based undercoat first.

I've not used oil based white paint for years, much prefer satinwood.

You can get both water or oil based in the Leyland range, which I've had great finish with.

Have a look in Screwfix, also stocked in B&Q

15 months ago my decorator used Dulux Trade oil based eggshell finish on all our internal woodwork, including doors.

15 months later it is as white as when it was first applied and it has proven to be very hardwearing.

If you are looking for a gloss, all of the waterbased ones I have used have stayed white, but they do take more coats and are not as glossy as oil based paints, mostly used Crown or Dulux, both have been pretty good

If you want a gloss finish that won't yellow, water-based is the way to go. It's supposed to be harder to apply well, but I've never used anything else so can't comment on that aspect.

I've used Johnstone's Trade Aqua Gloss in the past, and got good results. http://www.amazon.co.uk/2-5LTR-JOHNSTONES-TRADE-GLOSS-BRILLIANT/dp/B005QWAOBW
