Has the retailer a responsibility to their customers when the customer has paid top money for an item that has a long guarentee and the manufacturer of that item has gone bust?

The seller has liability under the Sale of Goods Act. If the warranty was provided by the manufacturer the seller has no liability for servicing the warranty.0

If the warranty is specified by the manufacturer, the retailer doesn't have to comply with that.
As said though, the retailer does have to comply with SOGA - what product, when was it purchased and what value was it ?
You may (if purchased by credit card) also have recourse to Section 75 of the CCA (1974) if you purchased via credit card.0
