Check your receipt if you buy any Homebase offers

Today I bought some plants and bulbs in Homebase.
The bulbs were "3 for 2" with the usual "cheapest item free".
I purchased 3 packs @ £4.99 and 3 packs @ £3.49, I expected the discount to be £8.48. This is how it works in M&S, Tesco, Sainsburys etc.
Instead I received a discount of only £6.98.
On questioning this at customer services I was told this was correct, that if I wanted to get the full discount I would need to buy the 2 lots of bulbs as separate purchases!
"OK" I said, "refund all this (it was a large total purchase) and I will do exactly that, and remember to give me back my "get £2 off when you spend £10" voucher"
So they rescanned everything, but could not work out how to get the total to match what I had already paid.
In the end they had to refund one pack @ £4.99, scan in 1 pack @ £3.49, and credit the £1.50 difference to my card.
The assistant lectured me on how she herself was also a shopper, not just a shop assistant and had had this happen to her too. I pointed out that she should have complained. She admitted that she didn't bother.
Obviously not a member of MSE!!
So check your receipt if you ever buy these "3 for 2" offers.
