Secure flat door (and windows)

Hello,

We are buying a ground floor garden flat in London (Stratford area), and would like to improve the security against break ins. The building is a Victorian terrace, with a conversion taking place in the 1970s (we think) in to one ground floor flat and one first floor flat, with a communal entrance to both. There is no history of break ins as far as we are aware, we just want to reduce the risk a bit!

So is it best to get a secure 'internal' front door (i.e. from communal hallway into our flat), or see if the owner of the upstairs flat would be willing to share the cost of a new communal front door?

Due to fire regulations etc, is it even possible to get a secure 'internal' front door? If so, does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you!

  • You can spend fortunes on security and it may not make any odds as a burglar can if they want and see something they like still enter most places.

As for asking another tenant to split the costs they probably will not want to entertain the idea if they think nothing is wrong and have not had any issues, If you want it done then you will need to pay up here.

Both, actually, but if you're buying the ground floor flat why would a burglar fight through two secure doors if there are easily-accessible windows he could use instead?

You may not need a new door(s) - the existing one might simply need some refurbishment or reinforcing.

Rear windows are probably a much higher risk - a police/crime provention visit will be the best advice you can get

Yes, very true! I mentioned windows in the title, but not in the actual main text itself. We will of course improve the windows too, I just think we already know what we want for them. For doors, however, we don't! I'll see if the local police offer such a service.

Look at this site,https://www.securedbydesign.com, every answer should be on there, even a list of kite marked fabricators and installers in various materials.
  • It will be better if you could hire a professional security company. Certain places have some regulations about placing surveillance cameras. When i Moved to Toronto , i had the similar problem. Finally protection plus helped me to install a home video surveillance system .If you hire a professional service, their experts will help you to find places inside your home to install security systems.you can seek the help of police also
