Master Key

Hi,

I've bought a new (to me) car and it only has one set of car keys, I was wondering how easy it would be (and how much it would cost) to get a master set made for the car?

Thank you

  • Anything from a few quid to several hundred pounds. Perhaps it would be better if you told us what car you have bought.

  • IIRC, from when I used to own a Honda civic, spare keys were quite expensive and only available from the dealer. Things may have changed of course but if not you could be looking at a 3 figure sum. Might be worth a call to your local dealer in the first instance.

When we needed a new key for our Mazda 2, it cost £250 including programming and we could only get it done at an authorised dealer.

Go to Timpson (usually co-located at Tesco)

My last two cars only had one key - 'coded' keys which operate the c/locking and start the car were £35 for the Focus (2 years ago) and £40 for the Megane (1 month ago).

The older the car/model, the cheaper the key: at worst they'll still be less than half the dealer price.

  • Timpsons are a bad idea, you end up with a cloned key which if lost or stolen can't be removed from the cars immobiliser memory as it would stop the remaining key from starting the car.
