  • Thanks for the replies. Other people have said Henry is good so might go for that.
  • According to my latest Which magazine the second best upright, after Dyson is a Vax Air3U88-AM-Be at £89.

    Sounds like a bargain!

Miele, we have had two dysons and they were both absolutely awful, on one the plastic was so soft that once you open the door to clean the fiter you couldn't turn the lock again to close it. Both had very poor suction.

Cylinders are often a lot cheaper, the miele C3 earns the title of best ever vacuum tested by which.

Personally, living in a household with several dogs of various sizes, I think Dyson are overrated. They used to be among the best however with the cyclonic technology now available in at pretty much every price point they are no longer competitive imo.

We have both a pet Dyson and an cheap Eureka cyclone suction vac from a big box store - the Eureka actually cleans better than the Dyson! The first day we had it, we went over the carpet with the Dyson and then redid it with the Eureka - must have pulled nearly half a canister of dirt & pet hair out of the carpet we had just cleaned! :O Its about half the weight to boot, which was the main reason we bought it, as my mother's MS made it difficult for her to use the Dyson as it was so heavy.

Not sure if the Eureka brand is available where you are, but if it is, I would certainly check it out. Otherwise, while I was living in Ireland I used a cheaper Vax brand vacuum that worked quite well - I believe it was their blue & black 'pet' version.

Buy a refurbished Dyson DC01 04 or 07. They were great models, easy to maintain and work well. I have a DC04 and it picks up all the pet hair.
I have a Miele Cat and Dog too, but I would not recommend it for picking up hair

I have that one and I think it is really good. I bought it in a sale so it wasn't that expensive.

Bissell. After reading threads on here previously.

We buy these every few years - they are amazing all round, including for pet hair.

We used to buy reconditioned ones (think ex-display, hardly used) for £30-£50, but they don't seem to have them now.

    About £100 including delivery now.

Used to recondition vacuums - Vax are cheapy and the filters clog up very quickly - if you don't keep on top of them motors get hot and burn out.

Bissell on the other hand run really well, the cheapest cylinders are rubbish, once you get up the range they are well thought out and well built.

Only thing to watch out for is the front brush rollers in the uprights, don't let them jam up.

Otherwise amazingly effective machines, for example the Powerforce 300.
