Buying parents council house

My father has lived in a council house for over 30 years and the tenancy is solely in his name. At 23, I'm now considering buying the house using the ‘right to buy’ scheme as I still live in the house with my father. The purchase would be between myself who has lived there all my life and my girlfriend.

From some light research into whether this would be possible, it appears that I would need to be a named tenant on the tenancy agreement to be able to do this. I believe it isn't possible for me to be named on the tenancy as when my parents split up several years ago, my mum was removed from the agreement and the individuals named on the tenancy can only be changed once.

As I have lived in the property all of my life and is where I have grown up, do I have a right to be able to buy the property? Or is there any help or advice that anyone is able to provide?

Many Thanks :j

You are not the tenant, you have no "right to buy".
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

you are not a tenant, the rest of your get rich quick scheme is irrelevant
  • No.
    Buy on the open market
Do a quick search to see this has already been done to death

OP I'm sorry to say that this subject is not usually well received on this forum.

Perhaps do a search and see the past results

Your dad would need to speak to the Council with regards to having your name added to the tenancy. Once this is done, wait a few months, then enquire about RTB.

Why would you buy with your girlfriend rather than your father who has lived there over 30 years?

Where's your dad going to live? He would go from having a secure tenancy to being at the mercy of you and your girlfriend.

Taking individual personalities out of it, this would be a very bad idea from the existing tenant's standpoint.

    Your research is accurate.

Just a girlfriend and dad's home of 30 years. It'd have disaster written all over it from day one.

Think what people will be gaining:

    - you think you'll get a cheap house
    - your dad will become a lodger in his own house, his house will be changed from what he knows, he'll be sidelined until he's trapped in one bedroom (probably not the best one either as he'll have been moved from that one)
    - your gf won't fancy sex, with your dad in the next room; she'll be moaning it's not her house and wants to make (expensive changes).
    - your dad's stuff will be tossed out as the gf buys in new (expensive) furniture, redecorates, lobs out your mum's favourite lamps and rugs.
    - you'll be caught in the middle, but under the thumb of your gf

And it goes on and on and on... multiple problems.

And, what if you split up, say in 10 years' time, and she's got kids .... what then? You and your dad standing on the kerbside with a suitcase each?
